HOLLYWOOD — “My family came to surprise me. Everyone I know is here. It’s a very ‘This Is Your Life’ moment,” filmmaker Gregg Araki said upon accepting the Outfest 2005 achievement award Thursday at the opening night for the 23rd annual Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, held at the Orpheum.
On hand to present the award were Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Brady Corbet, stars of Araki’s most recent pic “Mysterious Skin,” who offered a list of quotes from Araki’s works, ranging from the profound to the profane. Upon accepting his kudos, a stable of thesps from Araki’s past pics surrounded the helmer, including Rose McGowan and Kathleen Robertson.
But Araki wasn’t the only man of the hour. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa received a hero’s welcome for being the first mayor to attend Outfest in its 23 years of existence.
Villaraigosa assured the aud that “the honor is mine not yours,” but he also kept his priorities clear: “Spend your money in the city of Los Angeles. I have a day job, and I’d like to keep it.”
