Younger brother of former SAG President

Roy Schallert, younger brother of actor and former SAG President, William Schallert, died of respiratory failure in Los Angeles on May 19. He was 76.

Born in Los Angeles, he graduated from Loyola University and established the New Playwrights’ Foundation, converting an empty building on Hyperion Avenue into a small theater where original plays were presented in the 1970s and ’80s. He also worked for the L.A. County Health Department for over 40 years.

His late father was Edwin Schallert, former drama editor of the L.A. Times, and his late mother, Elza, was a fan magazine writer and radio commentator for NBC.

He is survived by his brother, a foster child, a stepdaughter and two stepgrandchildren.
