TV Land lands a ‘Big Break’

Net orders 6 half-hours from Sternberg

TV Land and reality producer Scott Sternberg are teaming on the original series “My Big Break.”

Cabler has ordered six half-hours that take a “Before They Were Stars” approach to a celebrity’s first big break in showbiz.

Sternberg separately hired former September Films exec Allison Powell to be head of development at his Scott Sternberg Prods. Shingle is at work on the six-part A&E reality series “Spying on Myself,” which bows next year, and AMC’s “Sunday Morning Shootout.” In addition, Sternberg has upped Jacquie Jordan to co-exec producer of “Shootout.”

First episode of “My Big Break” centers on the career kick-offs of Katey Segal and Jim Belushi. Segal had a role on “Mary Tyler Moore” spin-off “Mary” while Belushi made his debut on the short-lived Garry Marshall sitcom “Who’s Watching the Kids.”

Nick at Nite/TV Land VP of original programming Sal Maniaci said the show falls right into TV Land’s wheelhouse. Exec said the originals “celebrate not just classic shows but everything TV.”

Sternberg is very familiar with the format, having exec produced ABC’s “Before” specials for several years.

“My Big Break” would likely premiere next year in the 10 p.m. Wednesday slot that TV Land uses to bow original series like “Top 10” and “TV Land Confidential.” Cabler soon expects to announce another marquee series — a la spring’s “Chasing Farrah” — for 2006.

Sternberg’s shingle is coming off a productive 2005, having set up a handful of pilots in contention at cable networks Spike, GSN, A&E and Court TV.

“As reality continues to grow, we’ve done well in creating and developing new and exciting formats and brands within this genre,” Sternberg said.

As for Powell, exec oversaw Bravo’s “Miami Slice” and A&E’s “A Wife for Wills” while working as a development exec at September Films.
