Robert Marshak

Still photographer Robert Marshak died Feb. 14 in Topanga. He was 53.

Marshak began his film career in 1983 working on the early films of John Sayles, a relationship he maintained through Sayles’ latest film, “Silver City.” Marshak also worked on all of Steven Soderbergh’s films from “The Limey” in 1999 through “Ocean’s 12.” He was a member of the Society of Motion Picture Still Photographers and was nominated for the 2005 Publicists’ Award.

Born in New York, he attended N.Y. State University at Buffalo where he was an antiwar and community activist in the early ’70s.

In 1973 he moved to Santa Cruz where he was a founding member of the Santa Cruz Art Center. He began photographing theatrical productions, leading to his work as a photographer of Broadway shows including the original U.S. productions of “Les Miserables” and “The Phantom of the Opera.”

In addition to Sayles and Soderbergh, Marshak worked frequently with directors including Rob Cohen, James Brooks and Nancy Meyers.

He is survived by his wife, Amy Parks; two stepchildren; his parents; and a sister.
