Lifetime snares ‘Hunters’

Nets aims to order 6 scripted pilots by year's end

Lifetime has greenlit one-hour scripted drama pilot “The Hunters” from producer Efrem Seeger.

Seeger, whose credits include producing “Queer as Folk” and “Fresh Price of Bel-Air,” wrote the story revolving around a dysfunctional family of undercover government spies run by the devious matriarch. Seeger also is exec producer.

Lifetime aims to order six scripted pilots — a mix of comedy and drama series — by the end of the year. Already in pre-production is a comedy project from scribe Sally Lapiduss (CBS’ “The Nanny”) and standup comedian Debi Gutierrez, who plays a fictionalized version of herself, a woman raising three kids with the help of both her husband and ex-husband.

“The Hunters” reps the network’s intention to get more ambiguous characters and riskier storylines on the air. During last week’s press tour, execs said they planned to boost the amount of original programming by 30% this year. Several reality series already have been greenlit, including “I Married a Princess,” “Ms. Mogul” and “You’re Not the Man I Married.”

Casting for “Hunters” is under way.

Seeger most recently wrote for UPN comedy “Second Time Around.” His other writing credits include Fox’s “Party Girl,” “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper” and “Dear John.”
