Inside Move: McBride gets ‘Legal’

'Public' thesp to guest on Kelley's other 'Boston' skein

“Boston Public” may be gone, but Chi McBride’s character from the David E. Kelley drama lives on.

McBride has agreed to reprise his “BP” role of Steven Harper in an upcoming episode of Kelley’s frosh hour “Boston Legal.” Seg, already being pegged as potentially controversial, has Winslow High’s Principal Harper banning certain network news coverage on school grounds.

Specifics of the script are still under wraps, but it’s believed Kelley thought McBride’s Harper character would best be able to articulate the issues at play in the episode. McBride, meanwhile, is a busy man: He recently signed on to appear in at least five episodes of Fox’s “House.”

Kelley has been fond of crossing over characters between shows. The leads on “Boston Legal” began life on “The Practice” and, most famously, thesps from “Ally McBeal” and “The Practice” co-mingled a few years ago. Elsewhere, Richard Belzer’s Detective Munch from “Homicide: Life on the Street” seemed doomed when that show wrapped, but he later ended up on Dick Wolf’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

No word yet on whether Calista Flockhart might be available for a future “Boston Legal.”
