Comic thesp Anthony Anderson is joining the cast of “The Shield.”
Anderson (“Kangaroo Jack”) will appear in at least 10 episodes of the FX cop drama, which begins its fourth season in March. Anderson — in his first major dramatic role for TV — and Glenn Close play the season’s leading new characters.
Beginning with the season premiere, Anderson will play Antwon Mitchell, a former gang leader and drug dealer just out of prison. Character will claim to be on the straight and narrow, though his actions won’t match his words.
FX has become known for using comic actors in dramatic roles. Jamie Foxx snagged a Golden Globe for his telepic “Redemption,” while Denis Leary scored critical raves for his work on the first season of “Rescue Me.”
Anderson’s slate is filling up quickly: He’s in talks to play himself on at least one episode of HBO’s “Entourage.” He’ll next be seen in the features “King’s Ransom” and “Hustle and Flow”; latter pic, a drama, will screen at Sundance.
Thesp also starred in his own WB sitcom, “All About the Andersons.”
