MIAMI — Spanish-lingo media group Univision Communications has upped Alina Falcon to the top job at flagship Univision from the head position at its No. 2 net, TeleFutura. She becomes exec VP and operating manager.
Falcon reports to Ray Rodriguez, who was promoted to corporate prexy and chief operating officer Feb. 9 from his post as prexy of Univision TV Networks (including TeleFutura and pay TV net Galavision).
Falcon’s appointment suggests the Univision TV Networks prexy post might not be filled. She will oversee all operations, including programming, promotions, talent relations, news and operations for the net.
Falcon joined Univision in 1984 as a producer at Miami station WLTV.
Univision did not name a replacement for Falcon at TeleFutura, but an announcement is expected soon.
Falcon takes over at Univision just two days before one of its biggest productions, the live broadcast of music awards show “Premio lo Nuestro.”
It will air 8-11 p.m. Thursday from Miami, but organizers are scrambling to replace presenters after Mexico’s Televisa banned its talent from appearing on Univision shows. A number of stars of Televisa novelas, which air on Univision under a long-term programming accord, were among talent scheduled to present, and Televisa comedian Eugenio Derbez was to host.
Univision has not announced replacement talent for the show, which has been a big ratings grabber in years past.
It has announced additional kudos: Mexican popster Paulina Rubio will receive the Legendary Young Artists award, while group Los Temerarios will receive the excellence award.
