LONDON — Discovery Networks Europe has named Dan Brooke to run its portfolio of U.K. channels.
Brooke was a long-serving exec at Channel 4, where he helped shape the web’s digital strategy via launching and establishing niche nets FilmFour and E4.
Brooke replaces David Abraham, poached in April to run TLC in the U.S.
He will oversee all programming, production, development and operations for Discovery’s nine U.K. TV brands including Discovery Channel, Discovery Travel & Living, Discovery Real Time and Discovery Home & Health.
There is speculation that Brooke will explore the possibility of launching a free-to-air Discovery service for distribution on Freeview, Blighty’s hugely successful digital terrestrial platform.
Such a move would represent a significant shift in Discovery’s U.K. strategy.
“With a strong track record in channel development and management, marketing and advertising, Dan will bring both vision and fresh impetus to the leadership of our U.K. business,” said Discovery Networks Europe managing director Robin Paxton.
