‘Desperate’ TCA ending

Suburb sudser opens its sets

HOLLYWOOD — ABC gave TV critics a peek inside the homes of its “Desperate Housewives” Sunday night on the massive outdoor Universal Studios set.

Event marked the end of the two-week ordeal known as the TV Critics Assn.’s semiannual press tour.

Journos snarfed down suburban snacks– think pigs in blankets and chili in mini measuring cups– while snooping around the show’s working sets (the late Mrs. Huber would be proud of some of the scribes).

Alphabet brass, including entertainment prexy Steve McPherson, mingled with top producers (Steven Bochco, Marc Cherry, J.J. Abrams) and a small galaxy of the network’s stars (including a perfect-looking Sara Rue and “Jimmy Kimmel Live’s” Uncle Frank).

Earlier in the week, NBC suits and stars partied at the Universal City Hard Rock Cafe, while CBS and UPN joined efforts for a bash at the Don Quixote photo studios in West Hollywood. Viacom co-prexy Leslie Moonves and wife Julie Chen may have been the biggest draws at the latter party.

Meanwhile, critics entered a time warp Thursday on the Warner Bros. lot, where Warner Home Video celebrated the studio’s 50 years in the TV business (see accompanying story).

Fox kicked off the Big Six festivities Jan. 17 with a swanky soiree attended by most of the cast of “The OC,” along with network prexy Gail Berman. Cablers threw their own smaller parties the week before.
