Celeb editions of 'Millionaire' to aid UNICEF

LUCERNE — International celebrity editions of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” will raise money in a new initiative for children’s charity UNICEF.

The shows were announced Thursday at the Rose d’Or television fest in Lucerne, Switzerland, by UNICEF goodwill ambassador Harry Belafonte; fest chief exec George Luks; and Wolfgang Wornhard, prexy of UNICEF Switzerland. Fest kicked off Tuesday.

Many of the charity’s goodwill ambassadors, such as Nicole Kidman, will take part in the shows.

Initiative is the brainchild of Celador head of entertainment Colman Hutchinson, who is the show’s exec producer in Blighty. British producer Celador created the “Millionaire” format.

“Since we started our charity specials, our celebrities have raised more than ($4.7 million) for hundreds of deserving causes,” said Chris Tarrant, host of the U.K. “Millionaire.” “The kind of money a celebrity can win in a few minutes on the show can take some charities months or years to raise. They’ve made an immeasurable difference to thousands of lives — and to imagine that happening across the world is a fantastic prospect.”

The specials will be broadcast worldwide in the fall.

In the U.K., 28 celebrity editions of the show have aired. Those who have sat in the “Millionaire” hot seat include Paul McCartney, Joan Collins and Stephen Fry.
