Access hot, daytime not

'Insider' climbs, 'Pauley' hits series high

Syndie access shows saw ratings rise while daytime shows fell during the week of Jan. 3-9, reversing the previous week’s trend, as kids returned to school after the holiday vacation.

Among rookies, access skein “The Insider” climbed 7% to a new series high of 3.0, while daytime’s “Jane Pauley” bucked the trend, rising a tenth to tie its previous series high of 1.7. “Tony Danza” (1.4) and “Life & Style” (0.6) were flat while “Ambush Makeover” (down 15% to 1.1), “Larry Elder” (down 17% to 1.0) and “Pat Croce” (down a tenth to 0.7) declined.

In general, access thrived, as the top five newsmags were all up sharply, with each tying its previous season high or setting a new one. The top four off-net sitcoms set new season highs, and the top two gameshows, “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy,” were up 10% and 13%, respectively.

In daytime, however, all gavelers except the top two and all veteran talkshows except the top two were down. The yakker exceptions were “Oprah Winfrey,” up 25% to 8.6 on the strength of two Amber Frey appearances (10.9 on Wednesday and 9.5 on Friday), and “Dr. Phil,” up 10% to 5.6. Courtshow exceptions were “Judge Judy,” up 6% to 5.5, and “Judge Joe Brown,” unchanged at 3.8.
