ABC Family has ordered eight extra episodes of the original drama “Beautiful People” from Sony Pictures TV.
New episodes will air in mid-2006. Cabler is describing the bonus segs as a “continuation of season one.”
The hourlong’s August premiere drew a healthy 1.6 million viewers, faring especially well in key female demos. Over its initial eight-episode run, skein boosted primetime ratings for ABC Family by 23% in total viewers and 25% in adults 18-49 vs. the same time period a year ago.
“Beautiful People” follows a mother and her two daughters as they transition from a small town to life in New York. Paul Stupin and Michael Rauch exec produce. Daphne Zuniga, Sarah Foret and Torrey DeVitto star.
Order follows the renewal of ABC Family’s other original hour, Lions Gate TV’s “Wildfire,” which drew an early 13-episode pickup in August. Under prexy Paul Lee, cabler recently made a big push into original fare, airing scripted shows “Wildfire” and “Beautiful People” and the reality skein “Venus and Serena: For Real” over the summer months.
Last week, ABC Family greenlit its third original drama, “Kyle XY” (Daily Variety, Oct. 18). Touchstone TV-produced project follows a suburban family and the mysterious teen they take into their care.
