TV redo for Chinese feature

HONG KONG — “Zhou Yu’s Train,” the Chinese tearjerker that played out of competition at the Berlin festival, will be remade as a television series.

Screenplay is by Bei Cun, the novelist on whose book helmer Sun Zhou drew for the 2003 feature movie. Director of the retread is confirmed as Ding Xiaoxiong. Production is through state body Wenhua Chanye with lensing to begin by the end of 2005.

Sun’s pic, starring Gong Li and Tony Leung Ka Fai, was the story of a woman torn between a dissolute poet whom she travels to see and a hedonistic doctor she meets on the train. Overseas sales were split between Hong Kong’s Media Asia and Good Machine Intl. In North America pic was distribbed by Sony Pictures Classics.
