BERLIN — Sony BMG has named Bertelsmann exec Edgar Berger prexy of Sony BMG Germany.
Berger will take over the post in September, reporting to Maarten Steinkamp, president Sony BMG Continental Europe and chairman and CEO, Sony BMG Germany.
Move comes as part of Sony BMG’s expansion of its German management team.
Berger will be responsible for areas formerly overseen by Steinkamp, including domestic repertoire, international, marketing and catalogue. Berger will be named the company’s CEO in 2006.
“We have specifically looked for a candidate whose management experience comes from outside the music industry to help infuse our business with a fresh approach,” said Steinkamp.
Berger most recently served as executive VP of Bertelsmann since 2000. As head of Bertelsmann’s Corporate Network, he was responsible for synergy management and all issues related to strategic developments throughout Bertelsmann. He also worked on the expansion initiative instituted by company chairman and CEO Gunter Thielen.
Berger helped build the Bertelsmann Corporate Network, with offices in Hamburg and New York, reporting to Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, chairman and CEO of BMG and Bertelsmann’s chief creative officer.
