Luis Valdez will star in the world premiere of “Corridos Remix” at San Diego Repertory Theater. He co-wrote the multilingual musical with his son, Kinan Valdez, who directs.
The revue-style show, about a grandfather who wants to pass on his tradition and history to his sometimes unwilling granddaughter, draws on the Latino, African-American, Asian, Portuguese and French cultures and employs both traditional and contemporary music.
Luis Valdez, founder of El Teatro Campesino and director of pics including “Zoot Suit” and “La Bamba,” has not appeared onstage in many years. He’ll co-star with Raul Cardona, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer, Alysa Lobo and Fernando Flores Vega.
Performances are April 23-May 22 at San Diego Rep, with opening night set for April 29.
