'Light' in the LC plaza

Adam Guettel made his long-awaited Broadway debut with “The Light in the Piazza,” which is not your grandfather’s musical. The composer-lyricist says he wasn’t trying to move tuners in a new direction with his latest work: “The musical theater has always been going in five directions at once — and that’s how it should be.” As for his grandfather, Guettel paid respects to Richard Rodgers at the Lincoln Center preem of “Piazza” on April 18. “I do all my work with him over my shoulder. I respect him so much and love his work so much,” he said. “But (tonight) doesn’t feel like the culmination of anything having to do with him. It just feels wonderful.”
