Honoree: Danny Boyle

International director of the year

Zombie sleeper “28 Days Later” grossed millions worldwide and spawned a sequel, but with “Millions” director Danny Boyle goes back to his version of the real world. In the upcoming pic — also distributed by Fox Searchlight — Boyle saw his younger self in the story’s main character, an imaginative 8-year-old boy who stumbles upon a massive fortune.

Next up for the helmer is “Sunshine.” Boyle calls it a “spaceship movie, but we’re not going to spend a ginormous budget. I’m much better at working lower down on the radar where things pop to life fully formed rather than get tracked and have an expected arrival time.”
