SYDNEY — Luke Eve’s comedy-drama “Australian Summer” nabbed first prize Sunday at the Sony Tropfest, Oz’s premier shorts fest.
Jury panel included helmer Bryan Singer and thesps Geoffrey Rush, Abbie Cornish and Magda Szubanski.
More than 130,000 people watched the 16 short-listed nominees at events beamed via satellite to venues in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth, Hobart and Brisbane.
Eve won a clutch of prizes including a trip to Los Angeles to meet with agents and execs, an HDV camcorder, $4,000 cash and $5,600 credit for a sound edit and mix.
Nash Edgerton’s “Lucky” won second prize. Arky Michael and Bruce Spencer shared the male actor nod for “Australian Summer.” Natalie Carr was named female actor for “In Your Dreams.” Alister Grierson’s “Bomb” took the best comedy and people’s choice awards.
Billing itself as the world’s largest short film festival, Tropfest was founded by actor/director John Polson.
