The Toronto Film Festival — the unofficial launchpad for fall pics with Oscar potential — rounded out its lineup Tuesday, adding films by established auteurs and edgy indie helmers.

Pics by Stephen Frears (“Mrs. Henderson Presents”), Roman Polanski (“Oliver Twist”) and Martin Scorsese (“No Direction Home: Bob Dylan”) will be heading to Toronto, rubbing shoulders with new fare from Guy Ritchie (“Revolver”) and Michel Gondry (“Dave Chappelle’s Block Party”).

Both the Scorsese and Gondry pics are docus, bolstering Toronto’s rep as a hotbed of nonfiction films by high-profile helmers. (Sydney Pollack has his own passion-project in the fest, docu “Sketches of Frank Gehry.”)

Also added Tuesday, when organizers unveiled their full slate of 335 films from 53 countries, are a raft of projects whose stars will head north as the fest increasingly becomes a place to push pics for early awards-season jockeying.

One such film is “Edison,” starring Kevin Spacey, Morgan Freeman, LL Cool J and Justin Timberlake, chosen to close the 30th annual fest Sept. 17 with it North American premiere. Directed and penned by David J. Burke, pic follows a rookie cop and his corrupt partner in the aftermath of a raid gone wrong. Timberlake plays a journalist determined to uncover the truth.

Fest, which kicks off Sept. 8, will see 109 world preems and 67 directorial debuts.

They include the world preem of Frears’ Judi Dench-Bob Hoskins starrer “Mrs. Henderson,” the true story of 1940s society eccentric Laura Henderson and the Soho theater she made famous; Ritchie’s gangster thriller “Revolver,” with Ray Liotta; Jackie Chan starrer “The Myth,” weaving Chinese mythology and modern-day action-adventure, directed by Stanley Tong; Scorsese’s Dylan doc; Polanski’s “Oliver Twist,” starring Ben Kingsley and a cast of young unknowns; and “Capote,” from Bennett Miller, with Philip Seymour Hoffman in the title role.

Added to the gala lineup is Tommy Lee Jones’ directorial debut, “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada,” a tale of friendship, murder and redemption in which Jones also stars. Pierce Brosnan, Greg Kinnear and Hope Davis starrer “The Matador,” tale of a fading hit-man directed by Richard Shepard, also will receive a gala presentation.

Fest, still a premier spot for world film fare, has added the North American preem of Amos Gitai’s “Free Zone” to its Masters program. Pic is an Israel-France-Spain-Belgium co-production, starring Natalie Portman as an American in Jerusalem.

Fest throws ‘Party’

Special presentations include the world premieres of Gondry’s work-in-progress “Dave Chappelle’s Block Party,” a New York fete featuring music and standup comedy; “Trust the Man,” a romantic comedy with Julianne Moore, David Duchovny, Billy Crudup and Maggie Gyllenhaal, directed by Bart Freundlich; neo-noir tale “A Little Trip to Heaven,” with Forest Whitaker and Julia Stiles, directed by Baltasar Kormakur; and Ol Parker’s “Imagine Me and You,” starring Piper Perabo as a bride having second thoughts.

Also on the special presentations slate, the North American preem of the third in Park Chan-wook’s trilogy, “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance”; Philippe Garrel’s black-and-white “Les amants reguliers,” set in 1968 Paris; and “Fateless,” from Lajos Koltai, based on the novel by Imre Kertesz.

Other special presentations include a screening of Robert Flaherty’s “Nanook of the North” (1922), with a new score by Montreal composer Gabriel Thibaudeau performed by an orchestra that features Inuit throat singers.

“All the Invisible Children” comprises seven shorts with child protags facing adversity. The shorts are directed by Spike Lee, Jordan and Ridley Scott, John Woo, Mehdi Charef, Emir Kusturica, Katia Lund and Stefano Veneruso. Profits for the pic will go into a pool managed by Unicef, the United Nations World Food Program and Italian Development Co-op.

This is the complete 30th Toronto International Film Festival lineup.

'Aladdin' to Soar Above Box Office Competition Over Memorial Day Weekend

When Disney first released “Aladdin” in 1992, Bill Clinton was just settling in to the Oval Office, “Game of Thrones” wasn’t much more than a book idea percolating in the mind of author George R.R. Martin, and Johnny Carson was wrapping up his stint as “Tonight Show” host. In some ways, 2019 feels like a [...]

CANNES  —  Karim Aïnouz’s “The Invisible Life” begins with two  sisters, not much over 20, Eurídice (Carol Duarte) and Guida (Julia Stockler) sitting by the shore of one of the multiple bays around Rio de Janeiro, a lush tropical forest behind. They have all their life in front of them. Guida suddenly dashes off clambering [...]

    Film Review: 'Brightburn'

“Superman” meets “The Omen” in “Brightburn,” a watchable but super-silly mix of superheroics and evil-child horror that mashes together singularly uninspired ideas from both. Offering R-rated fantasy competition to “Aladdin” this Memorial Day weekend, it should do OK with undiscriminating audiences seeking familiar, forgettable genre thrills. But the franchise prayers that an open-ended fadeout dangles [...]

Film Review: Will Smith in 'Aladdin'

Of all the characters in Walt Disney Studios’ canon, is there any more animated than the Genie from “Aladdin”? In 1992, old-school cartooning seemed the only way to keep up with comedian Robin Williams’ rapid-fire sense of humor and free-associative gift for improvisation. Much of the appeal of the original “Aladdin” came thanks to the [...]
