Braga treks to Par pact

Trekker to cross studio's 'Threshold'

HOLLYWOOD — “Star Trek” vet Brannon Braga is remaining in the Paramount universe even as he prepares to plot a course for a new galaxy.

With “Enterprise” now wrapped, Braga has come on board as exec producer and showrunner of Par’s CBS drama pilot “Threshold,” an ambitious hour that examines the international impact of a possible alien invasion. Feature vets Bragi Schut, David Goyer, David Heyman and Mark Rosen are also aboard as exec producers.

In addition, Braga has inked an extension to his contract keeping him at Paramount Network Television through 2007 should “Threshold” get picked up to series. If the project doesn’t move forward, Braga’s locked in until 2006.

Par Network TV prexy David Stapf told Daily Variety that Braga knows how to “put together the pieces you need to have a successful series,” adding that the scribe’s skills “go way beyond the (sci-fi) genre.”

Scribe said he’s been interested in “Threshold” since he first read news of the project’s pickup.

“I remember thinking, that sounds kind of cool,” Braga recalled. “I was kind of jealous. And now here I am working on it.”

Braga said he “was eager to get out of outer space and do something more psychological and based in reality” after more than a decade of “Trek” work.

“This is a contemporary show with characters who are from our time,” he said. “The emphasis is going to be on the way in which gigantic, earth-shaking events impact specific individuals. It’s not B-movie aliens blowing up cities.”

Braga has been under term at Par since 1991, starting out as a scribe on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” where he wrote the Hugo-award winning series finale “All Good Things…” He was then tapped exec producer of “Star Trek: Voyager” and co-created/exec produced “Star Trek: Enterprise.”

Feature credits include co-writing “Star Trek Generations,” “Star Trek: First Contact” and “Mission: Impossible 2.”
