AFCN to increase exposure

Group to promote film in Asia with low labor, building costs

The seven-member Asian Film Commissioners Network met in Bali recently to increase the exposure of Asian films and filmmakers to the world’s major studio and independent producers, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, through international festivals and other events.

AFCN is promoting Asia for location shooting based on its non-union crew and talent and low labor and building costs.

AFCN was founded in 2004 by film commissioners from Japan, China, Russia, South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. Joining the group in the Bali meeting are commissioners from Singapore and Cambodia.

Host Deborah Gabinetti of the Bali Film Commission says, “We are offering not only Bali but the whole of Indonesia, comprising 17,502 islands with 350 ethnic groups, to world filmmakers,” noting that the country includes offers mountains, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, volcanos, jungles, beaches, mosques, temples and churches as locations.

“Some countries offer incentives, including tax holidays, to foreign artists and crew. And governments, at local and national level, are supportive when it comes to customs, immigration and stay permits,” she says.

A regional database of information for filmmakers is now available.
