‘Upside’ to open Bermuda film fest

Event to start March 18

Family drama and ballroom dancing will bookend the eighth annual Bermuda Film Festival. New Line Cinema family pic “The Upside of Anger” kicks off the fest March 18, while helmer Marilyn Agrelo’s “Mad Hot Ballroom” closes it March 24.

Event will honor Michael Winterbottom in its Filmmaker in Focus retrospective, unspooling his pics “9 Songs,” Berlinale Golden Bear winner “In This World” and Cannes Official Selections “24 Hour Party People” and “Wonderland.”

Fest lineup is divided into four categories: Fresh Visions — Competition Features; New Realities — Competition Documentaries; Top World Features Coming to BIFF 2005; and World Cinema Showcase.

“The competition film lineup is strong right across the board. We have award winners from top festivals, and the 14 films are from 10 countries, so there is great variety in terms of style of filmmaking, too,” said programming chief David O’Beirne.

This year’s jury includes Michael Clarke Duncan, Judy Greer, Jeff Arch, John Debney, Bonnie Voland, Srdjan Vuletic and Fanta Regina Nacro.
