New Line and Walden Media have tapped “Jack & Bobby” star Logan Lerman for the lead role in “Hoot.”
Family pic, which starts production in July, is being produced by Frank Marshall and Jimmy Buffett, who also will write original music.
Walden optioned Carl Hiaasen’s bestselling novel in February, and New Line agreed to do a negative pickup and handle worldwide distribution.
Vet TV director Wil Shriner (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) is helming and co-wrote the script with Rob Lieber.
Lerman plays a Montana boy who moves to Florida and uncovers a plot to destroy a population of endangered owls. He joins with a group of eccentric locals to save the creatures.
Thesp played the younger brother and future president on the WB’s “Jack & Bobby,” which wasn’t renewed for a second season. He also appeared in “The Butterfly Effect,” “The Patriot” and “Riding in Cars With Boys,” as well as telepic “A Painted House.”
Doug Jones and Evan Turner are overseeing project for Walden, while Mark Kaufman and Michael Disco are supervising for New Line.
