‘Skin’ in at Miami gay fest

Festival featured 32 features and 52 shorts

MIAMI — Gregg Araki’s “Mysterious Skin,” about a teen hustler and a man obsessed with alien abductions, drew fiction feature kudos at the seventh Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.

Araki also received the HBO career achievement award at the 10-day fest, which wrapped Sunday.

Event unspooled 32 features and full-length docus and 52 shorts.

Marion Lipschutz’s “The Education of Shelby Knox,” about a 15-year-old’s transformation from conservative Southern Baptist to liberal Christian Democrat and her fight for gay/lesbian rights in Lubbock, Texas, was tapped for the docu prize.

Audience awards went to Nicole Conn’s feature “Little Man” and Liz Lachman’s short “Getting to Know You.” Awards were presented and sponsored by HBO.

The 2005 fest added venues and brought in Sundance Channel and Comcast as new presenting sponsors.

Attendance was up 20% to about 12,000.

The eighth fest is skedded to unspool April 21-April 30, 2006.
