Sanchez takes Guadalajara reins

Producer replaces Marquez, who resigned in July

Jorge Sanchez, one of the giants of Mexican film, has been named director of the Guadalajara Film Festival.

He replaces Kenya Marquez, who resigned in July to pursue her career as a filmmaker.

Producer of 17 films, including Cannes selections “Danzon” and “No One Writes to the Colonel,” Sanchez is coming off a four-year hiatus from the industry while he was Mexico’s consul general in Brazil.

Sanchez launched distrib Zafra and Mexico City exhib Cinemania and founded the Mexican Assn. of Independent Producers. He is a board member of the Rotterdam fest and has been a juror at Sundance, San Sebastian and Toronto.

Sanchez said he plans to run the fest for at least three years and would find a screen for all Mexican pics from 2005 that don’t make the official competition during the next fest, which runs March 24-31.
