Rio fest kudos high on ‘Lower City’

RIO DE JANEIRO — The Rio Intl. Film Festival, Latin America’s largest fest, wrapped Thursday with the kudofest for the Brazilian competition and the local premiere of Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain.”

Helmer Sergio Machado’s debut pic “Cidade baixa” (Lower City) was honored with the 10,000 reals ($4,400) feature award, as well as actress kudo for Alice Braga.

“Lower City,” which preemed in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard, is from helmer Walter Salles’ shingle Video-filmes and is about the relationship between two youngsters and a young woman in the port of Salvador, Bahia state’s capital.

Marcelo Gomes’ debut feature “Cinema, aspirinas e urubus” (Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures), about two men on the run in Brazil in the 1940s, nabbed the special jury prize and actor kudos for Joao Miguel. The pic also premiered in Un Certain Regard.

“Crime delicado” (Delicate Crime), Beto Brant’s fourth pic, nabbed the special jury and critics’ Fipresci jury kudos.

Joao Falcao’s “A Maquina” (The Machine) won the aud kudo and pocketed Cinemark’s $8,800 prize.

Joel Pizzini’s “500 almas” (500 Souls) nabbed the doc jury prize and $2,600 plus $2,200 worth of services from local post production company Labocine.

The jury was headed by Venice Film Festival director Marco Muller with film director Katia Lund, actor Milton Gonçalves, and screenwriter Elena Soarez.
