SYDNEY — Wendy Hughes will play the co-lead in “Caterpillar Wish.”

The A$1.4 million ($1.1 million) pic is the first backed by the Australian Film Commission’s new IndiVision initiative for low-budget features.

Project, written and to be directed by Sandra Sciberras, and produced by Kate Whitbread, was chosen at an AFC IndiVision lab in February, where the filmmakers received feedback on script, performance and financing from U.S. producer Joshua Zeman (“The Station Agent”), Denmark’s Rumle Hammerich and Oz helmer Rolf de Heer.

Due to roll in June in Robe, South Australia, “Caterpillar Wish” is a drama about belonging and loss viewed through the eyes of a 15-year-old girl. Hughes will play the main character’s mom.

Pic is funded by the AFC, the South Australian Film Corp., distrib Palace and private investors.
