Euro producers link at confab

Giuliano feted; Lichtenthaeler, Rehnberg eye partnership

Spotlight was on some of Europe’s up and coming filmmakers at the European Film Promotion’s 19 Producers on the Move event in the Palais des Festivals Monday.

Chosen filmmakers have either had a box office hit in their home territory, sold a pic abroad or been selected in an international fest.

Cannes gathering, in its fifth year, gives them the opportunity to present their latest projects and network with potential partners.

Italy’s chosen producer this year was Nicola Giuliano, producer of last year’s officially selected “The Consequences of Love,” helmed by Paolo Sorrentino.

He is currently putting the finishing touches on potential Venice Film Festival title “La Guerra di Mario,” directed by Antonio Capuano and starring Valeria Golino as a woman who adopts an 8-year-old boy.

“The financial situation in Italy is so catastrophic right now,” said the Naples-based filmmaker, who predicted Italo production could fall to 50 film this year from 110 last year.

Among the partnerships the meeting set in motion Monday, Ireland-based Nathalie Lichtenthaeler and Sweden’s Lena Rehnberg talked about potentially co-producing “The Front Line,” Lichtenthaeler’s next project with her director husband David Gleeson.

Gleeson’s debut pic “Cowboys & Angels” was released in Ireland in July through Buena Vista Intl. and in the U.S. through TLA releasing in September. Media Luna handled international sales.

“The Front Line,” co-produced by Portman Films, which is also handling international sales, is a e4 million thriller about an African asylum seeker in Ireland who gets caught up in the Dublin underworld.

Said Lichtenthaeler: “For Europe, especially small countries like Ireland and Sweden, it is so important to find co-production partners.”

Rehnberg, a producer with Sandrew Metronome, produced the Swedish box office hit “Miss Sweden” and is currently in post on “God Save the King”, about the exploits of a Swedish girl band trying to get a record contract in the 1980s.
