‘Dodgeball’ director will steer ‘Norbit’

Thurber joins DreamWorks for Murphy starrer

“Dodgeball” helmer Rawson Marshall Thurber is coming onboard the Eddie Murphy comedy “Norbit” (formerly titled “Death Do Us Part”) at DreamWorks.

In the film, in which he’ll play multiple characters, Murphy stars as Norbit, a meek guy pressed into marrying a monstrous woman (also played by Murphy). When he subsequently meets the woman of his dreams, he has to figure out a way to be with her.

Original script was written by Eddie and Charlie Murphy, with a rewrite by “Guess Who” scribes Jay Scherick and David Ronn — who recently were hired by DreamWorks to write the bigscreen version of “Baywatch.”

John Davis is producing. John Fox oversees the project at the studio.

Thurber’s “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” was bought and developed by DreamWorks, but the studio ultimately passed on it. As a Fox release, it grossed $114 million domestically.

His return to the studio is due largely to his ties with producer Fox, who was an exec on “Dodgeball” while it was at DreamWorks, and to the new management structure at the studio, led by production prexy Adam Goodman.
