New Line orders ‘Bosses’

Ratner takes on 'Horrible' comedy

New Line has decided to go to work with “Horrible Bosses,” snapping up Michael Markowitz’s spec comedy script for mid-six figures and setting it up with Brett Ratner and Jay Stern to produce through their New Line-based Rat Entertainment shingle.

The darkly comic pic revolves around a trio of long-suffering friends who team up to murder their overbearing bosses with disastrous results, in the style of “Throw Mama From the Train.” New Line won an auction conducted Thursday by CAA.

Markowitz broke into the business with appearances in the films “The Flamingo Kid” and “Last Resort.” He was performing at Chicago’s Second City when a spec he wrote led to his being hired as a staff writer on “Duckman,” where he became supervising producer by the end of the show’s 70-episode run.

Markowitz also spent four years on staff at “Becker,” went on to “In-Laws” and “Random Years” and co-created Jason Alexander’s “Bob Patterson.” He’s currently supervising producer of “It’s All Relative” and has written three pilots for Brillstein-Grey.

Stern will oversee the project with Rat Entertainment director of development John Cheng, who brought in the project.

New Line president of production Toby Emmerich, VP Cale Boyter and creative exec Michael Disco will shepherd for the studio.

    Film Review: 'Carmine Street Guitars'

“Carmine Street Guitars” is a one-of-a-kind documentary that exudes a gentle, homespun magic. It’s a no-fuss, 80-minute-long portrait of Rick Kelly, who builds and sells custom guitars out of a modest storefront on Carmine Street in New York’s Greenwich Village, and the film touches on obsessions that have been popping up, like fragrant weeds, in [...]
