Costner, Kutcher going out to sea

Disney has inked Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher to star in helmer Andrew Davis’ sea-rescue action drama “The Guardian.”

Costner will play a highly decorated Coast Guard ocean-rescue swimmer haunted by tragedy, Kutcher a rebellious recruit who becomes Costner’s protege.

Studio bought “The Guardian” three years ago as a pitch from Ron Brinkerhoff. Script was written by Brinkerhoff with revisions by Jamie Vanderbilt. Shooting will begin in November in New Orleans.

Pic is being co-financed by Beacon and produced by Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson of Contrafilm. Jason Reed and Jill Morris oversee the project for the studio.

Costner was most recently seen in “The Upside of Anger.” He will also be seen in “Rumor Has It,” opposite Jennifer Aniston, for helmer Rob Reiner.

“The Guardian” will mark a return to the Mouse House for Kutcher, who toplined current release “A Lot Like Love” for Touchstone.

Helmer Davis is best known for actioners “The Fugitive” and “Under Siege.”
