A Weinstein ‘Trans’-ition

Brothers pick up rights to Tribeca favorite

CANNES — Bob and Harvey Weinstein’s nascent label Weinstein Co. has picked up North American rights to the Tribeca Film Festival standout “Transamerica,” starring Felicity Huffman of “Desperate Housewives.”

Pic made its North American preem at Tribeca last month and won Huffman an actress award there.

She plays a persnickety, preoperative transsexual who embarks on a road adventure to find the street hustler son of whose existence he’s just learned.

“Felicity Huffman gives an amazing performance, and we are excited about distributing Duncan Tucker’s wonderfully funny, intelligent and beautifully crafted film,” Harvey Weinstein said Tuesday.

Having already announced an initial slate of high-profile titles — including Anthony Minghella’s “Breaking and Entering” — this latest buy appears to be a throwback to the brothers’ early career strategy. They’ve essentially plucked a pic with a controversial, quirky hook, as they did in years past when they bought “The Magdalene Sisters” and “The Station Agent,” for example.

“Transamerica” was written and directed by tyro helmer Tucker.

William H. Macy exec produced. Linda Moran, Rene Bastian and Sebastian Dungan produced through the Belladonna label.

ContentFilm bought all overseas rights to “Transamerica” at Tribeca.
