‘Robots’ tops tepid holiday B.O. o’seas

'Aviator' trails 'Treasure' in Japan

The combo of the Easter break and school vacation in some Euro markets didn’t egg on the B.O. over the weekend, except in Spain, as the “Miss Congeniality” sequel and “Robots” posted generally ho-hum numbers.

Meanwhile, “The Aviator” took off in Japan but couldn’t catch the soph session of “National Treasure.”

“Robots” was the frame’s champ by a slim margin, according to Sunday projections, ringing up $17.1 million from debuts in 12 markets and holdovers in 29, playing on 5,179 screens; cume hit $44.2 million. Fox’s CGI toon reigned in Australia, collaring an estimated $1.9 million on 387, but placed third in Italy, fetching $1.1 million on 508 in a market that adored “Garfield” but generally shuns sci-fiers. Kidpic drew a uniformly solid $501,000 in Belgium, $450,000 in Holland, $364,000 in South Africa, $334,000 in Argentina and $302,000 in Hungary.

In its second weekend, the ‘bots retained the lead in Spain, snaring $2.4 million (jumping by 28%), spurring the local total to $5 million. But the Easter break didn’t deliver the kick exhibs were hoping for as the pic fell by 22% in Germany, pocketing $4.8 million so far, and slipped by 1% to $2.9 million in the U.K., amassing $9.3 million.

“Hitch” wooed an estimated $16.6 million from 5,000 prints in 54 markets, propelling cume to $125 million. Will Smith/Eva Mendes starrer was No. 1 again in its third weekend wide in Blighty, fetching $3 million (off a mild 30%), boosting local cume to $21.2 million; and in its fourth in Germany, making $2.9 million (down 23%), advancing to a socko $26.7 million.

Romantic comedy earned roughly $2.7 million in its second sojourn in France (falling by 37%), hoisting the local cume to $8.4 million.

Sony’s estimates had the pic at No. 2 behind rookie “Million Dollar Baby” in France; Hilary Swank starrer didn’t show anywhere near as much heft bowing in Germany, punching up an estimated $675,000.

“Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous” grossed a projected $10.4 million from 2,100 screens in 13 territories, led by the U.K.’s $2.5 million, Oz’s $1.85 million, Germany’s $1.78 million and Spain’s soft $1.15 million. Sandra Bullock starrer grabbed a moderately good $675,000 in Taiwan, $425,000 in Switzerland, $422,000 in Holland and $317,000 in Belgium.

“National Treasure” was tops again in Japan, unearthing some $2 million (easing by 25%), bagging a hearty $9.2 million in nine days; cume topped $160 million.

“The Aviator” clocked an estimated $1.6 million in Japan, its final major market, evidently skewing to mature auds and missing topliner Leonardo DiCaprio’s army of young female admirers; cume surpassed $102 million.

“The Ring Two” scared up $6.2 million in 20 territories, driven by Oz’s lively $1.58 million (in dollars, 102% bigger than the original), Brazil’s $1.1 million (No. 1, 74% ahead) and Mexico’s $1.2 million in its second weekend (still the pacesetter, albeit tumbling by 43%), which brought the local total to $4 million.

“Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” collected a fair $1.2 million in Japan (off 30%), scoring $5.2 million in nine days; cume hit $211.7 million, overtaking the first edition.

“Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera” levitated to $101.5 million, according to Odyssey, which reps the tuner abroad, highlighted by Japan’s $35.6 million, the U.K.’s $17.6 million and South Korea’s $11.6 million.

“Constantine” climbed to $108 million, helped by the U.K.’s sturdy $7.6 million in 10 days, declining by 30%.
