Spidey pic catches 6 f/x noms from VES

Awards to be presented February 16

“Spider-Man 2” led nominees for the Visual Effects Society’s third annual awards, with six mentions, followed by “The Aviator” and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” with five apiece.

Nominees in 10 feature categories were chosen by a panel of more than 60 visual f/x professionals over the weekend. Viewing and voting will take place online via the VESawards.com Web site between Jan. 31 and Feb. 12, with awards presented Feb. 16 at a ceremony at the Hollywood Palladium.

Nominations for visual f/x in a visual effects-driven feature went to “The Day After Tomorrow,” “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” and “Spider-Man 2.” Support visual effects noms went to “The Aviator,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Troy.”

“The Aviator,” “The Day After Tomorrow,” “Harry Potter” and “Spider-Man 2” drew nominations for single visual effect.

“Harry Potter,” “Hellboy” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” were nominated for performance by an animated character in a live-action feature, while “The Incredibles,” “The Polar Express,” “Shark Tale” and “Shrek 2” received noms for perf by an animated character in an animated film.

Noms for special f/x in service to visual effects went to “The Aviator,” “Spider-Man 2” and “Van Helsing.” Nominees for created environment in a live-action pic were “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,” “I, Robot,” “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera” and “Spider-Man 2.”

Nods for models and miniatures went to “The Aviator,” “Harry Potter” and “National Treasure,” while compositing noms went to “Harry Potter,” “Phantom” and “Spider-Man 2.”

Noms for performance by an actor or actress in a visual effects film went to Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Aviator,” Jude Law in “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” and Alfred Molina in “Spider-Man 2.”

The VES also announced noms in nine other categories for TV, vidgames, commercials and musicvideos.
