Spain’s Goyas honor ‘Sea Inside’ in waves

Amenabar pic nabs a record 14 statues

MADRID — Alejandro Amenabar’s foreign-lingo Oscar-nominated “The Sea Inside” on Sunday swept the Goyas, Spain’s version of the Academy Awards, taking a record 14 honors.

Based on the real-life story of quadriplegic Ramon Sampedro, “Sea Inside” took film, director, original screenplay and score, actor (Javier Bardem) and actress (Lola Duenas).

The 14 Goyas went one better than the 13 in 1990 for Carlos Saura’s “Ay, Carmela!,” and gave Amenabar his third-best take after “Thesis” (1996) and “The Others” (2002).

An unruffled Amenabar declared “Sea Inside” was an actors’ film and the prizes were for their performances. “Sea” won all thesp awards, another first.

Fernando Trueba’s music docu “The Miracle of Candeal” (docu and song) and Miguel Courtois’ terrorist thriller “El Lobo” (f/x and editing) — managed two awards apiece.

Of the other awards for features, Jose Rivera picked up adapted screenplay for “The Motorcycle Diaries”

The Spanish Academy continued to cold-shoulder Pedro Almodovar: His “Bad Education” went home empty-handed.

One of the few heartwarming moments in the 185-minute ceremony was a lifetime achievement award acceptance speech from 82-year-old Jose Luis Lopez Vazquez, a comedian-turned-dramatic star (“The Little Flat,” “Cousin Angelica”).
