Lensers to honor Omens

Kudos to be presented Feb. 26

The American Society of Cinematographers has tapped Sherwood “Woody” Omens to receive the 2006 ASC Presidents Award.

Kudos, honoring individuals who have made “exceptional contributions to advancing the art and craft of filmmaking,” will be presented at the 20th annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards gala Feb. 26 at the Century Plaza.

Omens’ feature credits include “History of the World: Part I,” “Coming to America” and “Harlem Nights.” He earned three consecutive Emmys for “An Early Frost” (1986), “Heart of the City” (1987) and “I Saw What You Did” (1988), and was nominated for “Magnum P.I.: Memories Are Forever” and “Evergreen.”

Omens won an ASC award in 1987 for his two-hour pilot “Heart of the City.” He also shared an Oscar nom in 1972 for the documentary short “Somebody Waiting.”

In 1989, he became a full professor at the USC School of Cinema-Television and taught for 15 years. He is now professor emeritus.

Previous recipients of the ASC Presidents Award include Robert Duvall, Linwood Dunn and Hans Koenekamp.

Omens is raising funds and planning programs for the new ASC Technology & Education Center. He was recently appointed vice chair of the Student Academy Awards executive committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
