Getting started

Noms on where they developed their acting chops

Frances Conroy
“Six Feet Under”

“I went to Juilliard for four years, and from there I toured with the Acting Company, formed by John Houseman from Julliard’s first graduating class. I did that for two years, and we learned how to use the things we had been taught at school and to stretch our acting muscles. You are your instrument, and the better you know your instrument, the more fun you can have. There’s acting as a creative process, and then there’s show business. And you, as an artist, will have a better time if you can be creative in various roles, and I believe that will serve the business side as well.”

Jason Bateman
“Arrested Development”

“I got my acting training in elementary school, when every so often I would get kicked out of the classroom. I would work on my comedy and then tighten up the drama to get back in. I never had any formal training. I always thought that if you learned how to act, that’s exactly what you would always end up doing on screen.”

Sophie Okonedo
“Hotel Rwanda”

“I was born and bred and still live in London. My formal training started in the youth theater there, at the Royal Court Youth Theater. Then I did a three-year training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. I’m not quite sure what I got of it. I think I’ve learned the business in the business. But my training did introduce my to a great many playwrights and works in a short amount of time: Shakespeare, Chekhov, Brecht, Pinter. And it also exposed me to ways of thinking about acting. I could never have done that without drama school. Also, my closest friends in the world are still the ones I met in drama school.”
