LONDON — High-flying Asian martial-arts pics “Hero” and “Zatoichi” make up two of the six films on the BBC Four World Cinema prize shortlist, announced Friday. The winner will be revealed live on BBC Four on Jan. 27.

Other titles on the shortlist, which was devised by leading critics, film school toppers and exhibs, are Pedro Almodovar’s “Bad Education,” Walter Salles “Motorcycle Diaries,” Andrea Zvyaginstev’s “The Return” and Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s “Uzak.” All foreign-language films released in the past year in the U.K. are eligible.

“House of Flying Daggers,” Zhang Yimou’s critically acclaimed follow-up to “Hero,” is riding high in the U.K. box office.

BBC Four created the award last year as part of its ongoing mission to position itself as the home of world cinema on U.K. TV. World cinema has been marginalized in recent years on terrestrial channels. Last year’s winner was Sylvain Chomet’s quirky animated pic “Belleville Rendezvous.”
