Chang has ‘Detour’ on road to prod’n

First non-John Woo-directed pic since 'Monk'

Terence Chang will produce “Detour,” a Thai actioner by first-time helmer Alexi Tan.

Pic is Chang’s first non-John Woo-directed movie since “Bulletproof Monk” in 2003 and his first non-English-language effort since Woo’s 1992 Cantonese “Hard Boiled.”

Chang and Woo’s Lion Rock Prods. will produce the $5 million “Detour” with L.A.-based Axis Entertainment. Financial backing is from Japanese production and investment outfit Micott & Bazara.

“Detour” is expected to lense on location in Thailand in late fall from a script co-written by Tan, Tony Chan (“Combination Platter”) and Edwin Baker.

Of Taiwanese and Shanghainese origins, Tan was educated in London and the Tisch School of the Arts in New York.

His first short, “17.17,” premiered at the 2000 Brooklyn Film Festival and landed him jobs directing commercials. He was spotted by Chang and Woo after making “Double Blade,” a 15-minute short using major talent including cinematographer Andrzej Sekula (“American Psycho,” “Pulp Fiction”).
