UPC bands with Philips for hi-def

Liberty Global’s UPC Broadband has pacted with Netherlands-based consumer electronics giant Philips to begin rolling out high-definition TV across 13 territories in Europe, starting with Holland early next year.

UPC will introduce a Philips-manufactured interactive HDTV set-top box.

The companies are targeting the 2006 World Cup Soccer tourney skedded for June and July in Germany.

No date has been released for the rollout in other territories.
