Austar going broad

World Brief

Paybox op Austar has pacted with Internet provider Unwired to provide wireless broadband to regional Oz.

Austar, which restricts its feevee service to outlying areas, believes broadband is a natural extension of its core pay TV business.

Austar and Unwired will trade part of their spectrum license boundaries, which will hand Sydney and Canberra metropolitan regions to Unwired; Austar will get access to the rest of the state of New South Wales.

Each company broadcasts on a different frequency, but there are plans for regional customers to be able to “roam” to the city, and eventually to overseas locations.

Deal is good news for regional residents as national telco Telstra is dragging its heels in broadband rollout for the bush.

No time frame has been given for the service to begin.
