“The Amazing Race: The First Season” is a detour back to how the reality ratings champ began, somewhat inauspiciously, six days after 9/11. Much of the show’s signature adrenaline-pumping challenges are here, and like any first season of a reality show, there’s something pure about it. Alas, the set falls short on extras.
Ultimate winners Rob and Brennan offer commentary on a handful of episodes, as do Kevin and Drew, bickering couple Lenny and Karyn and “Team Guido,” the first “Race” duo fans loved to hate.
Beyond the commentary, however, the DVD lacks many bonus features. Sure, there are loads of deleted scenes and a pair of vignettes: one catching up with old teams, the others discussing the show’s origins.
But fans of the show would have loved to see more about how the “Race” is actually put together — the painstaking detail put into every leg, for example. Secrets behind each pit stop. And more. We’ll be looking for it on the season-two set.
