‘Stewie’ DVD dominates

Fox's 'Family' pays off with $41 mil

Fox and Universal experiments with original DVD productions are paying off for both studios.

“Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin — The Untold Story,” Fox’s DVD movie spinoff of its once-canceled animated series, has generated more than $41 million in consumer spending in its first two weeks in release.

That already puts the title, released Sept. 27, among the top three straight-to-DVD titles of the year, behind “Mulan 2” ($60 million) and alongside “Tarzan 2” ($42 million).

“Family Guy” enjoyed a resurgence in the market with reruns on Cartoon Network and several sets of DVDs generating roughly $200 million in consumer spending. That led to the series’ resurrection with new episodes on Fox.

Universal’s original DVD movie released Sept. 27, “Carlito’s Way: Rise to Power,” a $7 million sequel to the 1993 original, has generated a solid $14 million from rentals and purchases in two weeks, ranking it among the top 10 straight-to-DVD pics of the year and not far behind Fox’s other release, “The Sandlot 2” ($19 million).

Upcoming DVD titles for U include “American Pie: Band Camp,” the fourth title in the series, and “Bring It On Yet Again,” the third chapter in the cheerleader movie series.Fox has several movies set for exclusive release on DVD in 2006, including “Like Mike 2: Street Ball” and “Doctor Dolittle 3: The Daughter Is In.”
