MADRID — Japan’s Pony Canyon and Phantom Film have taken Japanese DVD/video and theatrical rights, respectively, to “Real, the Movie.” Pic is the official film of Real Madrid, the second richest soccer club in the world.

Spanish distribution and sales house Sogepaq has also pre-sold all rights to “Real” to Korea (Unikorea), the Middle East (Prime Pictures), countries of the former Yugoslavia (Provision) and Jiant Pics for Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

“Real” goes beyond standard docs by mixing in fictionalized drama, made up of five cross-cutting story strands, and striking docu footage of Real Madrid’s soccer aces David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo in training, during physiotherapy and playing matches.

“The early deals on ‘Real’ underscore the large impact of soccer in general and Real Madrid in particular in Asia,” said Simon de Santiago, Sogecine/Sogepaq’s director of production and international.

Pic also has offers from major territories in Europe and strong interest from Latin America and the U.S., he added.

Shot in HD, and to be transferred to 35mm for theatrical release, pic is directed by Borja Manso. It is produced by Real Madrid Television and Spanish indie outlets Peliculas Pendleton and Huckleberry Films.

Pic will bow in Spain later this year.
