New Line Home Entertainment will release the DVD of Oscar-winning foreign-language film “The Sea Inside” on May 17.
New Line held off on firming up plans for the release until after the Academy Awards. Marketing budget will be significantly higher in the wake of the Oscar win.
While foreign-language films generally sell a couple of hundred thousand copies compared with millions for a major English-language film, the attention and consumer awareness generated during awards season — pic also won the Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award for foreign-language film — could mean tens of thousands of additional unit sales.
Pic stars Javier Bardem as Spanish poet and quadriplegic Ramon Sampedro, who spent 30 years petitioning the Spanish government and the Catholic Church for the right to end his life with dignity.
The DVD includes commentary by director Alejandro Amenabar, deleted scenes and a behind-the-scenes docu.
