MPA piracy tack aims at vid shops

The Motion Picture Assn. is targeting video rental shops in Taiwan as it continues to spearhead the war against piracy.

Since Jan. 4, Taiwanese officials have seized more than 68,000 pirated CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, along with more than 50 optical disc burners. Twelve people were arrested for manufacturing pirated goods.

Warning letters will continue to be sent to shops suspected of illegally renting pirated movies. If that doesn’t stem the action, the shop will be raided.

The action has been concentrated in three cities — Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung — but will expand to other areas during the year.

The MPA estimates piracy accounts for $896 million lost in potential annual revenue for its member companies in the Asia-Pacific region.
