Transylvania stakes claim to its own net

Magyar-lingo channel envisioned for Romania

BUDAPEST — The Hungarian government will sponsor the launch of a Magyar-lingo TV network in the Transylvanian territory of northern Romania, Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy announced during a recent visit to Tirgu Mures, Romania.

According to Medgyessy, the network will bring locally produced Hungarian programming to Transylvania’s Magyar minority, whose ancestors were Hungarian citizens when this large swath of mountainous terrain was part of Hungary before the First World War in 1914.

Until now, Hungarian speakers in Transylvania have had access to the Magyar satellite channel Duna TV uplinked from Budapest. According to Medgyessy, the yet-to-be-named network will enable local producers to generate their own programming.
