‘SVU,’ ‘Race’ set pace

NBC, led by the highest-rated “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” of the season, and CBS, with the return of Emmy-winning “The Amazing Race,” notched ratings victories on Wednesday, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen.

At NBC, “Law & Order: SVU” (6.3/16 in adults 18-49, 16.3 million viewers overall) was the night’s top-rated program, matching the crime drama’s second-best delivery to date. Net also received season-high results from reality skein “The Biggest Loser” (4.5/11 in adults 18-49, 10.6 million viewers overall), which picked up in its first outing against all-regular competish.

At CBS, “NCIS” (3.6/10 in adults 18-49, 15.3 million viewers overall) continues to open the night well, winning in adults 25-54 and total viewers with some of its best numbers ever. And from 9 to 11, the premiere of “The Amazing Race 6” (4.9/12 in adults 18-49, 11.8 million viewers overall) delivered the best scores for the opening segment of the series since the inaugural edition’s debut in September 2001.

Elsewhere, ABC was paced by “According to Jim” (4.1/10 in adults 18-49, 11.2 million viewers overall) and “Rodney” (3.8/9 in adults 18-49, 10.2 million viewers overall), while Fox had a modest premiere for medical drama “House” (2.7/6 in adults 18-49, 7.0 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: NBC, 5.0/13; CBS, 4.5/11; ABC, 3.4/8; Fox, 2.5/6; WB, 2.3/6; UPN, 2.2/6.

In total viewers: CBS, 13.0 million; NBC, 12.1 million; ABC, 9.5 million; Fox, 6.2 million; UPN, 5.4 million; WB, 5.1 million.
