Scandinavian media group Modern Times Group (MTG) has been awarded licenses for its channels TV3, ZTV and TV8 on the Swedish government’s digital terrestrial network.
The licenses will pump up the penetration for all three channels by about 5%, and will make TV3 the second largest commercial broadcaster in the territory, behind TV4.
MTG president and CEO Hans-Holger Albrecht called it “the first step to open up competition in the terrestrial network.”
MTG has been waging a campaign to convince the Swedish government that TV4 should lose some of its competitive edges in the new digital age, including being the only commercial channel granted national penetration in the territory. Licenses are for one year.
